Last week, the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) announced preliminary data for industrial robots in 2018 at a press conference in Chicago. Barely set a new record in 2018, with sales only up 1% from 2017. No information was provided about services and agricultural robots.

In fact, the achievements in 2017 are indeed remarkable, with a year-on-year increase of 30%, so that other years are overshadowed by comparison. Although the 30% growth rate is difficult to cross, the 1% growth in 2018 is somewhat incredible. What has slowed this process?

1. For the first time in 28 years, China's auto sales have fallen by 6%, and US sales have remained flat. Global car sales are down 3%. This led to a 15% decline in sales in the automotive sector of the robotics industry and a 26% decline in the United States.

2. Global smartphone sales also fell by 5%, which led to a decline in sales of the electronics sector by 8% in the robotics industry.

3. The strategic director of Minor Automotive Equipment (China) Co., Ltd. said: "Consumers seem to be adopting a 'wait and see' attitude, because there are some uncertainties about the rumors that the policies will affect car purchases, as well as the overall economy.

4. On a brighter note, he also stated: "Electric vehicle manufacturing is a huge stimulus to automotive robots. Install new production lines and factories, retrofit existing production lines and factories--such as battery and electric motor assembly--and Expanding the electric vehicle portfolio is critical to the long-term strategy of many OEMs. China is the focus of global electric vehicles and will make significant investments (for many years to come).

Despite the decline in robot sales in Asia, sales in the Americas and the EU increased by 6% and 7%, respectively. In fact, the United States performed very well last year, up 15% from 2017, while Canada and Mexico fell by 15% and 13%, respectively.

IFR reports that industrial robots in other manufacturing industries, including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, plastics and metals, have also seen double-digit growth.

Challenges facing industrial robots

Looking ahead, there may be many uncertainties in the automotive industry, especially as it transitions from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles begin to enter the market.

In announcing the preliminary data conference of industrial robots in 2018, a spokesperson at the IFR Executive Roundtable emphasized that finding skilled workers remains the primary concern.

Another challenge is that robot manufacturers need to make their products easy to learn, do not require traditional programmers, and use intuitive operating software.

Robert the Chairman of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF)? Atkinson said: "The U.S. government has not taken enough measures to enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. in the field of robotics. The National Science Foundation does have a national robotics program to support research, but the funding support is basically inadequate. The requirements aren't tightly linked either, focusing on the auxiliary functions of the robot rather than replacing the work of the workers. "

ARM Chief Executive Byron Clayton said: "The shortage of skilled workers is driving changes in the recruitment and training of potential and existing employees. Unskilled workers must learn to operate, program, maintain robotics and related needs technology."
